Inaugural TEDxAcequiaMadre Conference Comes to Santa Fe University of Art and Design
Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) October 03, 2012
For the first time, a TEDx conference is coming to Santa Fe, co-sponsored by Santa Fe University of Art and Design(SFUAD). The independently organized event, called “TEDxAcequiaMadre,” is modeled after the annual international TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conferences. It will take place Nov. 3 from 10:00 to 5:30 p.m. at The Screen on the SFUAD campus.
“It’s humbling for The Screen to serve as the community base for TEDxAcequiaMadre,” said Peter Grendle, manager of The Screen. “It’s a huge compliment to be the venue for TEDx and to represent the innovation that this conference stands for.”
In partnership with sponsors SFUAD and the Santa Fe Community Foundation, TEDxAcequiaMadre is designed to showcase local individuals sharing their ideas on a range of innovative and provocative topics, including the future of New Mexico’s acequias (irrigation channels), theatre as a tool for igniting social change, creating co-ops in food deserts, the ways nature influences design, establishing artist colonies along the Rail Runner, the association between gender and health, strategies for ending violence against women, promoting galleries on wheels, and personal reinvention in times of change. SFUAD Graphic Design Department faculty member Maggie Macnab, one of several featured speakers, will discuss the topic of her latest book, Design by Nature.
“We live in a time that demands we do more than just inspire people—our goal is to motivate people to become actively involved in the ideas and projects our presenters will be addressing,” said Dominic Cappello, curator of TEDxAcequiaMadre. “As the phrase ‘acequia madre’ [mother ditch] implies, we hope our efforts flow out from Santa Fe to other communities in New Mexico.”
Those interested in attending TEDxAcequiaMadre can purchase tickets for $ 50 at http://www.thescreensf.com. The TEDx ticket also includes entrance to the post-TEDx ACT NOW reception, which will connect TEDx presenters with participants. It will take place at Stage C of SFUAD’s Garson Studios.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = an independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).
About TED:
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “ideas worth spreading.” Begun as a four-day conference in California in 1984, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Long Beach, California, along with the TEDActive simulcast in Palm Springs; the annual TEDGlobal conference is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.
TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the recently launched TED-Ed platform for students and educators; the TED Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide; and TEDBooks, short e-books by speakers that elaborate on a single idea originally presented on TED’s stage. TED has established the annual TED Prize, in which exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
