This book manages to be both insightful and easy to read. It explains the complex issues of group dynamics and relationships in a way that simply makes sense. Chris Rose uses a metaphor throughout the book that really works to elucidate the theory. The imaginary characters breathe life into the text whilst the suggested exercises are helpfully thought-provoking. I would highly recommend the book for all those training in counselling (to help with understanding what Personal Development groups are for) and for anyone either facilitating groups or considering becoming involved as a participant in any sort of group therapy. Invaluable – this should be a core text for all trainees and beyond.

The Personal Development Group – The Students’ Guide

This book charts the sometimes stormy voyage of the Personal Development Group as part of counselling and psychotherapy trainings, using fictional characters to illustrate the complex challenges of taking part in such a group and entertaining imagery to depict the journey embarked upon.
Chris Rose’s writing skills match her obvious expertise as psychotherapist and group analyst; I found this to be an absorbing and thought-provoking study. It is rare to find a serious textbook with such humorous readability combined with such shrewd insights into what motivates our behaviour and attitudes to our fellow human beings. Excellent, I was really disappointed to come to the end! Rosie James

perfect accompaniment to certificate in counselling course, 1 Dec 2009

This book title is on our “recommemded reading” list for our certificate in counselling course – but I believe that it should be on the “required reading” list! For beginners particularly this book gives food for thought on the subject of personal development and outlines practical notions for self awareness. Since these processes are a constant throughout the life of a counsellor as a matter of necessity, then this book shall also provide the perfect accompaniment to the counsellor in the area of personal growth and development. Loved it!
