This is the book I wish I read when I began investing a few years ago. It will set anyone off in the right steps and mind set for investing. It also has a good section at the end where the author has rate some other investment books. The book will also serve as a good reference that you can refer back to when analyzing your investment technique/system. Note, this book is well worth the read for investors of any level of experience.

I wanted to read this book because I am very familiar with Warren Buffett, but not so with George Soros even though he has been extremely successful. I always thought that they were completely different since Soros is a trader and Buffett is an investor. Some of the similarities are that they both emphasize not losing money, do not believe in efficient market theory, do not diversify, and think of risk as not knowing what one is doing. They are even similar in their personal lives by being frugal. I enjoyed reading this book.

When you have made, and recognised that you have made, errors investing your own money, it is time to read and apply this book.

Other reviewers have suggested it as a book for novice investors – I disagree. You have to get to the stage of knowing that you need a better, more focussed and disciplined approach before the real value of this book becomes clear. Buffett and Soros are at opposite ends of the investor-trader spectrum but have many basic characteristics in common. Mark Tier calls these “habits” because when mastery is achieved, their application becomes automatic.

Few will wish to adopt the same style as either Buffett or Soros, so having experience of markets, price moves and the logistics of position sizing, buying and selling is needed before you can apply the general rules to your own investment style and specialisation.

Mark Tier has a good website with investment IQ and investment personality tests that mesh well with this book. It has helped me to improve my investment performance – the real measure of any investment book.
