San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 10, 2012

On April 12, Futures Without Violence (FWV) and The Waitt Institute for Violence Prevention will honor sports legends Willie Mays and Joe Torre at the The Y Factor: Men Leading By Example, a national summit saluting the work of men who are leading the movement to prevent violence against women and children throughout the U.S. and the world. Mays, Torre and professional boxing champion Sergio Martinez will join top advocates in discussions focusing on the messages, programs and leaders that will help turn today’s boys into men who respect all the women in their lives.

At The Y Factor Leadership Awards luncheon (noon-2p.m.), sportscaster Marty Lurie will moderate a conversation with baseball legends Mays and Torre about their careers and ongoing role as mentors. Additional luncheon speakers will include Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Acting Asst. Attorney General Tony West, with videotaped remarks from Vice President Joe Biden. Also participating are philanthropist Ted Waitt, violence prevention activist Malcolm Astley, whose daughter was killed by her ex-boyfriend, and Sacramento high school football coaches and students participating in a national program called “Coaching Boys Into Men.”

Professional boxing champion Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27 KOs) will participate in a one-on-one session (9:40 –10a.m.) that explores his childhood in Argentina, where he was constantly bullied, and his commitment to raising public awareness about domestic violence and the Violence Against Women Act.

Film producer Mikaela Beardsley will preview footage from the upcoming PBS documentary, “Half the Sky,” based on New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristof’s award-winning book (3 p.m.).

About The Waitt Institute for Violence Prevention

The Waitt Institute for Violence Prevention is a private operating foundation committed to breaking the cycle of violence in our homes, schools, and communities on the local and national level. The Waitt Family Foundation has supported violence prevention efforts since 1993. To streamline our efforts, WIVP was founded in 2005, by Ted Waitt. We are the only private foundation in America that focuses solely on primary prevention. Through this work, we change social norms that accept violence as a part of life.
